I am theusernamemileswastaken and here is my wheel:

There is a slight problem, that is that it does not spin...

The skateboard truck that i used will not hold the wheels up correctly, they bend down under the weight.

As you can see in the first photo, the wheels rub against the 4x4 post.

The only fix for this i can think of is to buy some better trucks, but I'm curious if anyone else experienced the same problem and overcame it somehow?

I bought some boards of MDF (medium density fiberboard) and cut out various square sizes.

Then i cut just over 4x4 inch, holes in the center of all the squares, i stacked them, then i slid a 4x4 pole down the center.

The height of the 4x4 inch pole pictured in approximately 110 cm.

This was the construction of the base.

To make the wheel, i used a piece of wheel of equal thickness to the tread of a skateboard wheel.

I cut it into two approximately 40cm diameter circles and then cut out circular holes into the center of them slightly smaller diameter than a skateboard wheel.

I then cut out two 1 meter diameter circles from a board of MDF, i cut out two circular holes into the center of them slightly smaller diameter than a skateboard wheel.

I then screwed one of the smaller circular pieces to the larger aligning the center holes.

I then hammered a skateboard wheel into each wheel.

I secured a skateboard truck to the top of the base.

I then attached the two wheel to the skateboard truck.

Total height of the base is approximately 110cm.

Total height of wheel is approximately 160cm.

Any thoughts on how i can get the wheels to be vertically aligned?

Thanks :)

It seems that the wheel bearings are loose on the axle and this is allowing the wheels to sink down.

Anyone else experience this problem?

Any thoughts on why it occurs and what to do about it?

Thanks :)

Btw, nice dog haha.

I first bought the cheapest wheels possible. So then I went to my local skate shop, and they gave me a pair of old trucks. I only put one wheel on my wheel, so it bend forward aswell. I put a small 2x4 block against the 4x4 piece of wood to give it support when i'm not spinning.

With 2x4 Block ------------------------------------------Without 2x4 block

Try and get the sturdiest looking trucks that you can find. Make sure they are made out of metal, and not plastic. :)

His name is Max ;)

The trucks i have are sturdy and made of metal ;)

It seems to be the actual movement of the bearings and wheel on the axle, rather than the axle itself that is causing the wheels to droop.

I may need to get another pair of trucks and bearings that fit together tightly.

Thanks :)

What I said to the guy working was I was making an art project and it has to hold lots of weight :P

He was like "oh.. Righteous!"

Lol i actually said the same thing when i was at the DIY(hardware) store "art project". I said the same thing to friends and family, i don't think they are ready for this righteousness yet :P

Haha thats funny. My friends know about it, but they're cool.

I should of clarified this problem beforehand, it slipped my mind. When I was building the wheel, I comprehended this problem and became concerned that if the glue where to dry while the wheels where dipping in at the bottom, then they"d get stuck that way and the spin wouldn't be as efficient. In order to get around this, I used metal wired to tie the upper parts of the wheels closer together while letting the glue dry, so that when it was done there'd be no dipping at the bottom. It worked. I apologize for forgetting to mention this important detail.

I believe you may be able to use the same wheels if you can get them back out some how, clean out the faulty glue, reinsert them and put more glue in the cracks, then as the glue dries use metal wire to hold the upper portion closer together, while placing 2 or 3 sticks under inbetween the wheels to keep them from dipping. Let it dry for two days at least, and when you remove them, the dipping will be reduced so much that it doesn't really effect the spin. I hope this helps!

By the way, its a very nice design, the base reminds me of a Mayan Temple...

Hello Jozen Bo.

I need you to be a bit more specific about what you are suggesting.

I have used no glue in the construction of my wheel.

The skateboard wheels slot into the larger wheel and remain perfectly aligned within the hole.

However...

The skateboard wheel and bearings do not seem to snugly fit together with the axle.

I have already taken then skateboard wheels out of the big wheel.

I have done this and i find that they are loose on the axle, even though the bolt head is as tight as it can be.

The reason for the drooping is within the skateboard wheel, it is either because the skateboard wheel is loose on the bearings, or the bearings are loose on the axle, or both.

You are not saying to glued the bearings to the axle are you?

I think i just need new trucks, bearings and maybe wheels.

By the way, its a very nice design, the base reminds me of a Mayan Temple...

Thanks.

Funnily enough, i did not actually plan it to look like this, i just went down the hardware store planning to copy your design.

The thing was that i had to buy more wood than i needed, they only sold huge boards.

I thought up the idea if stacking boards to make a base on the spot.

When the wood was delivered to my home, i worked out i had enough to stack wood all the way to the top of my post like a pyramid.

I wasn't thinking about it looking like a Great Pyramid or Mayan Temple.

I've only just realised now lol...

Funny how that evolved.

The base isn't actually finished yet, i am still thinking about whether to carry on the pyramidal shape to the top or make it more uniform from the base.

I'm moving soon so i haven't screwed the base pieces into alignment, as it stands it's completely deconstructable.

Thanks :)

I glued the wheel into the hole that is attached to the large circle board. If you are getting the wheel to hold to the large wheel without using glue, then you don't need the glue. Glueing the bearings would likely lose spin. It sounds like it is possible that the trucks or the wheels are allowing the weight to bend in too much, if this is what you are observing then getting new sturdier trucks ought to do the trick.

Hello Jozen, it was actually the bearings, i got some titanium abec-7 bearings and the wheels are now perfectly level.

I replaced the trucks and wheels with higher quality components for good measure also.

I got higher density/hardness wheels so that there could be no drooping due to compression.

I also purchased a stronger pair of trucks/axles.

I also purchased some long board trucks in case i decide i need the wheels to be further apart.

I should be spinning very soon.

Thanks :)

Congrats!!!

I am very happy to hear this and look forward to hearing of your experiences. I am going to begin a thread that identifies verified Portalists, lock it, and unlock it whenever I receive verification. The pictures you posted, the conversations we've had, and the spirit you show all add up to you being on that list.

Also, I recall reading a mysterious book that had extreme impact on my thinking, called "the Handbook for a new paradigm", the author is unknown and remains unidentified, and the writing is such that I am left wondering if the words actually from from this world, I recall it discussing numbers, something about 3 becoming 7 becoming 12 and then splitting into pods...I will start a thread and quote it, as the Author (whoever it is) states very clearly that anyone can copy and do whatever they want with the material, there is no copyright! I will name the thread after the title of the book and place it in the Times category!

I appreciate your company!

Best Regards,
Jozen-Bo

Thanks Jozen.

Please do start a thread on that book it sounds very interesting!

Here are some picture of the wheel now that it spins:

I stacked the rest of the wood i had cut squares holes out of on top of what i had before, i may cut them further to get a more proportional pyramidal effect.

I also switched the standard length skateboard truck/axle for a longer longboard truck/axle, this is what gave me the additional room to make the base thicker by stacking more pieces of wood around the 4x4 post.

There is still plenty of room to alter it further if i wish to.

The wheels i used have a very solid/dense core which has spaces in it which look a like thick spokes, this allows light to shine from one side of the outside of the center of one wheel to the outside of the other.

I have been recording my dreams and daily activities for the past week, i will develop my code further soon and begin to spin it.

Wish me luck :)

Are you spinning a dream/day code yet or just the checkerboard pattern?

guest poster
I'm spinning a Day code everyday and checkerboard on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I haven't started a Dream Code, but my dreams have become more vivid and awesome! Last night I was in the mountains playing soccer with my friends, then riding a horse, then talking to my friends, and just all over. :P

I'm excited to see your results.
